Tourism - Iceland's curse or a new blessing? - A photography project by Tobias Seeliger

Iceland conjures up images of volcanoes and glaciers, of fire and ice. Iceland is known to be a country of contrasts. A country where the prehistoric nature is touchable. And Iceland tourists do just that. It’s possible to go right up to a glacier and stand on ancient ice. Waterfalls, lava fields, mountains. None of it a problem for the country’s visitors. At least for the moment. In such a small country thousands of tourists don’t go unnoticed, neither by the island inhabitants nor by the island’s fragile nature. How can all these tourists be dealt with? How much tourism can nature take?

The question is how could one show this beautiful country with its great people to the rest of the world in a way that’s true to it. Spending time in Iceland one can’t help meeting locals and tourists. (Though it’s much easier to meet tourists than locals.) I want to introduce contemporary Iceland to the world with a long-term photographic report. An Iceland with all its conflicts, old and new, modern and ancient. A changing country. A sense of elation between mass tourism, where hope and dread walk side by side, tradition and the Icelanders’ nature loving freedom.

This photography collection doesn’t want to preach but document Icelandic reality that sees its traditional ways of life, its nature, its quiet threatened by the same tourism that also means a huge chance for the country’s inhabitants and its economy.

Berlin-based photographer, Tobias Seeliger, has extensive experience with visualising change and transformation. Following his professional training as photographer Tobias worked as press photographer for various daily newspapers, magazines and renowned photo agencies. His main focus was music photography. Together with Peter Matzke he has published various books about the Gothic scene. In 2014, the photo collection »Zeitenwende« (Changing Times) was published, which shows the transformation of the former GDR in 1989/90 that he documented photographically as a 15-year-old.

His photo collection FIREFIGHTERS (German/English) was published in 2016. For this publication, Tobias Seeliger spent more than three years accompanying and photographing several firefighter brigades in their daily work. Each one of his impressive photos tells a story and shows what it means to go to work every day for the benefit of others.

There is no better photo artist to address the impact of mass tourism on the society and fragile environment in Iceland for this latest long-term documentation, as once again the social aspects takes centre stage in this project.

This crowdfunding campaign aims to finance an initial research trip to Iceland for the preparations required to facilitate true-to-life photos for this project. The goal for this research trip is to lay the groundwork for the later extensive photography project, to meet key people, identify job opportunities and subject area.

Anybody fascinated by Iceland, any nature lover, anybody interested in social aspects should care about this project.

The photo collection The Impact of Tourism on Iceland (working title) aims to document all of Iceland’s conflicts: between greed and economic necessity, destruction and conservation of nature, optimism and fear of social isolation, in photographs. Thus showing a beautiful country in transition: landscape photography that illustrates the effects of mass tourism, cityscape images of change, documentary photographs that reflect the specific human, societal and social aspect of changes in Iceland. Short texts will accompany the photographs.

Any reporting and distribution to support this crowdfunding campaign would be greatly appreciated. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any queries you may have.
